Hardware and software recommendations

There are no hard and fast rules about what you need to participate in the CoderDojo and any reasonably new laptop will be more than adequate but below are some ideas that you might find helpful. Have a look at details of past sessions of plans for the next ones to get an idea of what you want to get involved with.

Hardware

Minecraft

Any laptop bought in the last 3-5 years will easily run Minecraft.

Scratch

Scratch will run on almost anything. However, one notable exception is the iPad.

Software

Minecraft

To participate in the Minecraft group you will, unfortunately, need to have bought a Minecraft account. It is recommended not to use Windows 8 as no one has been able to get it working yet without some serious pain!

Scratch

Scratch is good for younger programmers and, in particular, those with little or no experience. It can be downloaded and installed free from the Scratch website.

Python

The mentors at MadLab know a variety of different programming languages but the one that we are using mostly is Python. If you are using a Mac or a version of Linux you will almost certainly have it installed already. For Windows, you can download it from the Python website.
